The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is a three year full time course and is divided into six semesters. The BA course at IGNOU, as the name suggests, offers an undergraduate degree in arts and humanities to those who want to pursue their career in this field. In order to be eligible for admission into this course, one should have passed his or her 12th standard examination from any recognized board with English as a compulsory subject. Apart from fulfilling these requirements, he/she must also produce relevant documents such as marks list, passing certificate etc., which will be evaluated by the Admission Committee of IGNOU.

The eligibility criteria for pursuing this degree programme are that the candidates should have passed class 12th examination from a recognised Board/University.

Eligibility Criteria for IGNOU BA Course

The candidate should have passed the higher secondary examination or an equivalent exam from a recognized board.

In case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribes(ST) category, the upper age limit is relaxed as per government rules and regulations. In such cases, candidates must produce a certificate for having been born before 01 July 1985.

Candidates who are appearing in their 12th class final examinations can also apply but they would not be able to complete the course within two years due to practical exams conducted by respective universities at semester level so these students will get additional one year grace period after completion of degree courses i.e., till 31st March 2020 for IGNOU BA Programme 2018-20 batch only.

What are the Course Structure/Syllabus of Ignou BA Program

Ignou BA course structure has been divided into six semesters. The first semester is dedicated to foundational courses like English, Fundamentals of Information Technology (FIT) and Computer Fundamentals etc., where the emphasis will be on acquiring basic knowledge about these subjects. During this period students are also expected to opt for one optional subject in order to get a holistic idea of their interest in that particular field. Some of the disciplines offered during this phase include Anthropology, Economics, Education, Geography, History Archaeology among others. The second semester comprises core courses as Communication Skills Development Programme (CSDP), Introduction to Sociology and Environment Studies. Each of these courses is designed to enhance the students’ knowledge in their respective fields, giving them an exposure as well as practical training on how they can use this information for future reference. Apart from these three courses, two other elective subjects are also offered during this semester which should be chosen by the student depending upon his/her interest and expertise areas.

The third semester comprises core courses like Advanced Communication Skills Development Programme (ACSDP) & Political Science besides offering four optional subject choices such as Journalism, English Literature etc., where emphasis will be given on enhancing one’s creativity along with inculcating a deep understanding of that particular discipline through relevant case studies and examples drawn from real life situations.

The fourth semester is dedicated to the final year project, which is an important component of this degree programme. Students are required to undertake a research study on any topic of their choice and present their findings in a written report as well as through an oral presentation before a panel of experts.

Semester five and six offer courses like History, Indian Culture & Civilization, Business Organisation etc., where students will be given detailed knowledge about these subjects along with hands-on training so that they can apply it in practical situations. The IGNOU BA course syllabus has been designed in such a way that it offers maximum exposure to the students and helps them develop skills which are essential for their career growth.

As an undergraduate student of IGNOU, you can opt for career opportunities in the BA field after your course completion. A BA degree is considered as a general one and hence any graduate with it can find employment easily anywhere across India or abroad. 

This course also prepares students to enter into competitive exams like UPSC examinations etc., which are held by State Government Services Commission (SPSCs), Central Public Service Commissions (CPSCs) and other national level public service commissions etc.
