Things to know about Munich Airport
On 16 May 1992, the biggest ever move in European aviation took place in just 16 hours:
Riem Airport was relocated to the new Franz-Josef-Strauß Airport in Erdinger Moos.
The new Munich Airport opened in 1992 with 12 million passengers. The capacity limit of the terminal was reached within a few years. With the opening of Terminal 2 in 2003 and its expansion to include the satellite, the number of passengers rose continuously and reached a record level of 47.9 million in 2019. Then in 2020 came the slump: the global Corona pandemic caused passenger numbers to fall to the level of 1992. In 2021, just 12.5 million passengers used Munich Airport.
Munich Airport recorded 192,000 take-offs and landings in its early years. In 2019, 417,000 aircraft movements brought the runway system to its capacity limit. The global Corona pandemic plunged take-offs and landings at Munich Airport to an all-time low of 147,000 in 2020, and aircraft movements in 2021 also fell well short of previous years’ levels.
Air cargo experienced a particular boom at Munich Airport: in 1992, just 57,000 tonnes of cargo were handled. The increasing demand in passenger and cargo traffic made extensive expansion measures necessary. In 2017, a record 356,000 tonnes of cargo were handled through Munich Airport. The global Corona pandemic caused a drastic drop in air freight to 153,000 tonnes in 2020. Fortunately, cargo traffic already recorded a renewed increase of 14.9 per cent in 2021.
