Stress management for students

Share post:

With the fall semester starting off, students are back to the rut of university life. For some, the university is an exciting experience. However, a lot many students are apprehensive about starting off, especially COVID-19.

Notwithstanding the stress from the pandemic, the university itself is a test for nerves. The constant need to perform well, the pressure from the exams, peer pressure, mounting bills, the need for a career, etc. are some of the ways the university can get too much to bear.

If stress is not addressed, students’ mental and physical health suffers. Chronic stress leads to problems with sleep, and naturally, the performance of students falls even further.

Some students might also then have panic attacks when it gets all too overwhelming. Furthermore, chronic stress and anxiety can also lead to depression, meriting then a visit to the doctor, who can easily be booked over

Managing stress

For students with run-of-the-mill stress, knowing how to manage the bouts of stress is imperative for not just their health, but their performance at school as well. Following are some helpful techniques to employ:

Prioritize sleep

It is hard to sleep in between the hectic schedules, especially around exam time. However, sleep deprivation is counterintuitive. It prevents you from focusing, being attentive and productivity also plummets.

Therefore, make sure that you prioritize sleep. This will take some savvy scheduling, but the impact on the physical and mental health will be profound.

Exercise is not just necessary to stay fit but is also necessary for your mental health.  When you exercise your, body releases the good chemicals, known as endorphins. These then not only promote the feeling of happiness in the body but also help to counter the stress hormone in the body as well.

Breathing exercises

When we are stressed, our body perceives itself to be in danger. The fight or flight response is then triggered, which disrupts breathing. Remedying this rapid and shallow breathing is imperative to get the body out of the stress zone.

Therefore, whenever you experience stress, start breathing exercises, and enter start the Zen zone.

Be organized

Being in the right state of mind is important, and with the mess, it is not possible. Being ill-organized is not just about missing deadlines, but mess around in the physical space as well. Lack of organization kills productivity as well.

Therefore, save yourself the trouble by being more organized. Use a planner or calendar to make sure that you are aware of all the deadlines, tutorials, class, office hours, etc.

Moreover, keep your physical space tidy as well. Rather than wasting time finding things, being lost about your possessions, and stressing about not finding your items, make sure you clean and keep everything tidy.

Positive thinking

It is important that you actively channel positive energy. Affirmations and positive thoughts help your brain perform better and are effective for improving your outlook. Therefore, be more optimistic and even trick your brain into thinking better thoughts if you have to.

Eat better

What you eat serves as fuel for your body, physical and mental, both. So, make sure that you eat a healthy diet and survive on not just Ramen.

Get help

It is important to reach out to people for timely help, rather than suffering alone and becoming ill. Tell your friends and family about the challenges you are facing, and they can offer insights about dealing with them. Moreover, socialization is also helpful for destressing.
