Male can also be infertile. One in every six couples faces infertility and half of the cases are due to male infertility.

Causes of Male Infertility

Fertility is the ability to reproduce. In contrast, when a person is unable to reproduce it means he’s infertile. Reproductive organs play an imperative role in procreation. When they do not function properly pregnancy may not be achieved. Male infertility is the inability of a man to produce sperm adequate to fertilize a female egg. The following can be causes of male infertility:

  • Sperm disorders.
  • Blockage preventing sperm delivery.
  • Injuries, Infections or Inflammation.
  • Testicle Issues e.g., undescended testicles.
  • Hormonal issues or health issues.
  • Medical history.
  • Poor lifestyle choices.

Treatment of Male Infertility

Most of the times, male infertility can be treated successfully. It can be treated by lifestyle changes, surgery, assisted reproductive technology (ART), and therapy. Following treatments are present to treat male infertility:

  • If a man has undergone vasectomy, its reversal enables the man to produce healthy sperm.
  • IVF combined with ICSI is the most advanced scientific procedure available to aid pregnancy. In this, a single healthy sperm is injected into a female’s eggs in order for her to conceive.
  • Sperm Retrieval.
  • Proper medication or hormone therapy.
  • Healthy lifestyle and refraining from unhealthy habits e.g., smoking, overeating, etc.

ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

ICSI is a kind of IVF. It comes at aid when a couple is facing male factor infertility. The word Intra-Cytoplasmic basically means injecting single sperm into egg’s cytoplasm. In this healthy sperm is retrieved from male and injected into female’s eggs in laboratory under optimum conditions. The fertilised eggs develop into embryo which are transferred to female’s body to achieve pregnancy.
