The Life and Work of Pool Masako Katsura

 Masako Katsura is a Japanese artist specialising in watercolour and gouache paintings of landscapes, people, and animals. She has exhibited her work throughout Japan and in many international galleries.

Masako was born on July 27, 1967, in Yamaguchi Prefecture. After graduating from high school, she studied at the Tama Art University in Tokyo. While there, she met fellow student Naoto Hattori, with whom she founded the contemporary art group Marrakech in 1990.

Masako’s first solo exhibition was held at the YES Gallery in Tokyo in 1998. Since then, she has had numerous exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, including shows at The Museum of Modern Art (New York), Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), Musée du Louvre (Paris), Tate Britain (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Denver Art Museum (Denver), and Palazzo Reale di Città di Castello (Milan).

Her works are included in many public collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), National Gallery of Australia (Canberra), Alte Nationalgalerie (Vienna), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles), Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Bilbao), Singapore National Collection/National Arts Council Singapore(Singapore).

She has won several major titles, including the Women’s World Nine-ball Championship in 2004 and 2007, the Women’s World Eight-ball Championship in 2013, and the Ladies European Pool Championships in 2016.

She was the Women’s World 9-Ball Champion in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010 and the Women’s World 8-Ball Champion in 2006. Her other notable achievements include runner-up finishes at the Women’s Professional Billiards Championship three times (1998, 1999, 2001) and the WPA Women’s World Nine-ball Championship twice (2005, 2007). Katsura also won the Asian Games gold medal in the women’s pool in 2002. In August 2017, she announced her retirement from professional pool playing.
