Why Would Anyone Choose Tasbih?

TASBih means “inclined to the earth”. This is an Islamic religious ceremony that was preached by the prophet Muhammad (SAW), who is believed to have introduced it to his followers. The action of TASBih was to bring down or bow down to the ground before Allah. The act of TASBih is intended to humble and praise the almighty. Some believe that TASBih should be performed by all Muslims, but not in public because it is an act of worship that should not be expressed publicly.

This is a ceremony that started with the declaration of peace by the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) and spread into many communities thereafter. TASBih has deep spiritual, psychological and physical effects upon the believer. The Islamic TASBih is much like the Komboskini or Rosary of the Greek Orthodox Church and also the Japa Mala of the Hindus. Hindus and Buddhists also use the Japa Mala including 27 beads, a chakra divider of 108 and the Bagavhad Gita.

During a typical imam’s blessing, a black silk rope is wrapped around a handful of prayer beads and dipped in water. In a practice unique to Pakistan, the imam conducts a short prayer while holding the prayer beads over his head and then dipping them in the water. Some Imams who are followers of all schools of Islam, will wear an abaya or loose outfit, consisting of a robe of camel fabric, loose-fitting trouser, head scarf and a pair of prayer beads. They will put on makeup, pray and fast at the same time. Before leaving for prayers, they might even cut their right nostril to lessen the effects of smoke and fumes. Muslims who follow allah ten times believe that the stones are God’s protection from those who would oppose him. The green is to signify Allah, the red is for his son, and the white represents Christianity. Each of these three colors is believed to have different powers and effects. For example, green can make someone beautiful, while red can transform them into fierce fighters. On the other hand, white tasbih gemstones are believed to protect Christians from evil spirits.

Beads are made in many different shapes such as oval, round, square, teardrop, heart-shaped and more.
